The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Branch, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the university management and the Oyo State Government over the alleged failure to implement the 2026 Federal Government–SSANU renegotiation agreement and pay outstanding salary arrears and allowances.
The union threatened to embark on a three-day warning strike beginning Wednesday, October 21, 2026, if its demands are not met before the expiration of the ultimatum on Tuesday, October 20.
The decision was contained in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of LAUTECH following resolutions reached at the union’s branch congress held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
According to the letter, jointly signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Fajoye H. O., and Secretary, Comrade Owolawi O. J., members expressed dissatisfaction with the continued non-implementation of the agreement reportedly concluded between the Federal Government and SSANU on June 29, 2026.
The union lamented that despite the conclusion of the agreement, its provisions had yet to be fully implemented at LAUTECH.
SSANU further alleged that other states in the South-West had implemented the agreement and made the necessary financial provisions available to their universities, while LAUTECH workers continued to await similar action.
Among its principal demands is the immediate implementation of the agreement, including a 35 per cent salary adjustment as CONTTA, earned allowances and other financial and non-financial benefits applicable to its members.
The union also demanded the payment of all outstanding arrears arising from the agreement, with effect from January 1, 2026, without further delay.
In its resolution, the congress declared that the seven-day ultimatum would commence on Wednesday, October 14, and expire at midnight on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
It warned that failure to address the demands would trigger a three-day warning strike from Wednesday, October 21, to Friday, October 23, 2026.
The union further threatened to escalate the dispute into an indefinite, total and comprehensive industrial action should the issues remain unresolved after the warning strike.
While acknowledging the potential implications of industrial action for the university community, SSANU maintained that its members had demonstrated considerable patience and restraint in the interest of industrial harmony and the stability of LAUTECH’s academic calendar.
The union, however, insisted that the prevailing economic realities and prolonged delay in meeting its demands had made further waiting unacceptable.
It consequently urged the university management to take immediate steps towards resolving the dispute and averting a disruption of academic and administrative activities.
Copies of the letter were sent to the University Registrar, Bursar, SSANU National President and National Vice-President, Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of SSANU/NAAT/NASU at LAUTECH, Oyo State Commissioner of Police and Director of the Department of State Services in Oyo State.
As of the time of this report, the letter does not indicate whether the university management or the Oyo State Government has formally responded to the ultimatum.
Editorial assessment: The headline is strong, factual and suitable for newspaper publication, online news platforms and broadcast newsrooms. It distinguishes the threatened strike from an industrial action already underway.
